a) Metallographic laboratory:

Metallography means the investigation and study of the internal microstructure of metals. The history of this science began with the possibility of polishing and engraving various metal surfaces and their structural details with an armed or unarmed eye. After that, the field of metallurgy quickly found its position as one of the important principles of material science and engineering. Today, without knowing the modern principles of metallography and its optimal use, research, industrial and quality control activities will face a dead end. Investigating the microstructure and macrostructure of metals using optical, electron and stereo microscopes and comparing them with relevant standards, predicting mechanical and physical properties, checking structural and surface defects. The micro and macrostructure of metals using optical microscopes Electronic and stereo are investigated. Comparing these results with the relevant standards helps to predict the mechanical and physical properties, check the structural and surface defects. These analyzes are used to estimate the useful life of parts, to investigate the causes of failure.

In practice, macrographs of the structure of metals, alloys, and materials in general are examined in such a way that they can be seen with the naked eye or at low magnification (about 5 to 15 times). For this purpose, first the surface of the sample is polished and cleaned, and then it is etched by special chemical solutions. These chemical agents dissolve the phases on the metal surface and identify its various components, holes, cracks and other defects. Macrographic examination includes weld sections and ingots. The micrographic section, which aims to study and understand the internal structure of materials in terms of grain size, grain boundaries, distribution of grains and metal forming phases. Microscopic structure examination includes preparing and interpreting optical microscope images of existing phases, determining the volume percentage of phases, examining microscopic defects, Determine the thickness.

b) Mechanical laboratory:

  • Tensile test:

Tensile test (engineering tensile test); It is widely used to show basic information about material strength and as a test for acceptance of material properties. In the tensile test, the sample is subjected to a one-dimensional tensile force that increases continuously, while an increase in the relative tensile length is also observed at the same time.

The shape and size of the stress-strain curve of any metal depends on the chemical composition, heat treatment, previous history, deformation and strain rate, temperature and stress state during the test. Tensile strength, yield strength, percentage of relative length increase and reduction of cross-sectional area are the parameters that are used in describing the stress-strain curve of any metal. The first two parameters represent strength and the next two parameters represent ductility.

  • impact test

Different types of impact tests are used to determine the tendency of the material to have brittle or malleable behavior. This type of test reveals differences between materials that are not visible in a tensile test. For the impact test with a groove, there are two standard samples:

1) Charpy sample with a square cross-section and a 45-degree V-shaped or U-shaped groove placed horizontally.

2) Izod sample with a square or circular cross-section and a trestle groove that is placed vertically.

The main quantity measured in the impact test is the energy absorbed at the failure of the specimen. After the failure of the test sample, the pendulum returns to a height that decreases with the increase of energy absorbed in the failure. The energy absorbed in the fracture, usually expressed in Joules, is read directly from the graduated dial of the impact device.

The impact test with the grooved sample becomes meaningful when it is performed in a range of temperatures to determine the temperature at which the transition from malleability to brittleness occurs.

  • Brinell hardness test

Brinell is one of the four common methods of testing indentation hardness or penetration hardness. First, the surface of the piece must be cleaned, and then a ball made of steel or tungsten carbide is used to apply force on the surface of the piece. The diameter of the bullet is about 10 mm. The duration of applying force is between 10 and 30 seconds. The applied force is different for the objects, for example, 3000 kg for hard metals, 1500 kg for medium hard metals and 500 kg for soft materials. After that, the Brinell hardness number is calculated according to the formulas of this method. In the Brinell method, because the effect surface is large, often thick samples are tested with this method. In this method, the indentation radius is greater and the number obtained is an average of local heterogeneities, and surface scratches have less effect in this test.

c) Non Destructive Testing (NDT)

In order to ensure the quality of production parts or validate industrial processes, conducting standard tests as one of the quality control tools used by manufacturers and contractors; It is expanding day by day. At the same time, in many cases, conducting the test depends on sampling and destruction of the test sample. On the other hand, in many real conditions in industrial projects, it is not possible to sample or destroy the part in question or it requires very heavy costs. Non-destructive testing (NDT) refers to evaluation and testing methods that do not cause any damage or change in the nature and performance of the parts and assemblies under test.

The non-destructive tests that can be performed in this laboratory are as follows:

Radiographic test (RT)

– Visual inspection test (VT)

– Penetrating liquids test (PT)

d) Quantometery Laboratory:

This laboratory provides the chemical composition of various metals and their compliance with international standards by using the newest and most modern analysis devices using the spectrometry method and with the help of experienced experts.

The services that can be provided in the quantum laboratory are as follows:

Analysis of iron base alloys based on ASTM E415 standard.

e) Sample preparation:

One of the most important and influential factors in the correct performance of various tests is the preparation of the test sample in such a way that the simplest errors in sample preparation can lead to gross errors in the relevant test results. Accordingly, in all test standards, before explaining the test conditions, the method of sample preparation is explained.

The preparation department is responsible for the preparation of samples for various tests that can be performed in the laboratory, with appropriate equipment and experts who are familiar with valid national and international standards.

Excerpts from the sample preparation section:

  • Preparation of tensile test samples
  • Preparation of impact test samples
  • Preparation of metallographic test samples
  • Preparation of macrographic test samples
  • Preparation of quantometric test sample
